Medical Herbalism

Medical Herbalists work in a holistic way by not just relieving symptoms, but in helping the body to re-balance itself and thus bring about an improved state of health and general vitality.

The plant medicines used by today’s orthodox medications, have stood the test of time. Rather than use a substance which has been isolated from the plant, such as aspirin from willow bark, the whole plant is used. Thus the plant’s own powerful constituents are buffered and / or potentiated by other naturally present chemicals.

Herbal medicine is therefore effective in treating most conditions.

An initial consultation with our herbalist lasts for one to one and a half hours, during which time the current presenting symptoms will be thoroughly assessed. The overall balance of the body is then evaluated by discussing any present or previous problems in all of the body’s systems. Pulse and blood pressure readings are taken.

The herbal prescription is thus made up to suit the individual patient, for it is the whole person who is treated , not just the disease.

Our herbalist gained a Diploma in Medical Herbalism in 2001 from The College of Phytotherapy, and has recently become the Resident Medical herbalist of the William Turner Herbal Garden in Morpeth’s Carlisle Park.

William Turner is regarded by many as the original pioneer of Medical Herbalism and was born and bred in Morpeth.
